NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE - My Portfolio
This week the New York Times Magazine has a special issue on living above 800 feet in the big apple. Living at that sort of height doesn’t appeal to me but the design of this issue definitely does. Graphic Designer and Design Director for the magazine posted snapshots of the issue on twitter and said that it’s “by far the best issue – of any mag – that i’ve designed.” Even the pentagram partner Michael Bierut expressed his jealousy of the design on twitter!
The design is takes advantage of the well balanced use of big bold typography and wonderful photography from Jimmy Chin of National Geographic. For me the typography is very reminiscent of the headers used by wired magazine in both their print and digital editions. However this typeface is a sans-serif and it’s based off of Willey’s typeface NSW01. The typeface was redrawn to give more of a condensed and fatter appearance to each character. The condensed characters with their large x-height do well to echo the bustling skyline of Manhattan awash with megastructures that feel like they are tripping over one another.
I am going to try and get myself a printed copy of the magazine so that I can keep it for future research. Below are some of the spreads from the new issue.
