Hello! - My Portfolio
Welcome to my new portfolio website! My name is Karl and I’m a 20 (almost 21!!!) year old graphic design student from Glasgow. For me design hasn’t been a lifelong obsession like others say. It was only in my final two years of high school that my intrigue for design began to grow, prior to that everything I did was expressive art. I’ve always loved the freedom that paint and a brush can offer and during my advanced higher art course I learned some pretty amazing techniques that may come in handy sometime down the line in my graphic design career. The main aspect of design that tore me away from painting was the control and structure that you could easily incorporate into anything you make and I’m so very glad that I made the change from paint to typefaces as I now feel as though I have found my calling.
Graphic design isn’t the only aspect of my life, for me it is important to maintain a hobby alongside a career and my hobby is cycling. Cycling is the only sport in which I’ve became truly obsessed about my performance and this mentality mirrors my attitude to words my coursework, I’m always striving to imporve as a designer and an athlete. Whenever I’ve had one of those tough days infront of the Mac or my sketchbook there is nothing more satisfying/mind clearing that taking my road bike out and going for a blast. In a way I do think that cycling has helped my through my three years of studying so far as it has offered me a way to escape from my thoughts for a few hours at a time and there has been numerous times mid/post ride when an idea will pop into my head. One of the best bits of advice I’ve heard was from Don Draper, of HBO’s Mad Men, when he told Peggy: “Just think about it, deeply, and then forget it. An idea will…jump up in your face.” This single piece of advice is true to my way of working and it’s always managed to help me come up with an idea!
